The Corporate Learning Factbook

Benchmark Your Own Learning Organization Today

The most detailed and comprehensive view of the learning market to date, The Corporate Learning Factbook: Benchmarks and Analysis of U.S. Corporate Learning and Development provides training executives and professionals with a broad set of benchmark data, analyzed by industry and company size, which can be used to assess their own learning organizations.

The 67-page study is based on 1,200 respondents representing a cross section of company sizes and industries within the United States. Readers receive guidance on calculating baseline metrics for their organizations, which can then be compared against benchmark data in the study. The Corporate Learning Factbook analyzes a wide range of metrics, including: budgets, expenditures per learner, cost per student hour, program priorities, budget allocations, staffing sizes, staff to learner ratios, staff to total spending, technology usage and budgets, outsourcing spending, and much, much more.

Readers of the study will also find many interesting facts and discussions on trends shaping the learning market. These are just a few key findings:

  • Technology, retail, state and local government, and business services are industry sectors experiencing the fastest growth in training-related spending.
  • Spending per employee varies widely (from $4,000 in business to $200 in retail), according to industry sector and company size. The average per learner expenditure is $1,412.
  • LMS spending is typically 3 to 7% of the total training budget.
  • Adoption of virtual classroom technology is very high in several sectors (technology companies have a 75% adoption rate).

This study is an invaluable resource for any business-minded learning professional and offers rigorous, quantitative support for future decisions.

Analyst Corner

Chris Howard,
Principal Analyst

Learning content management systems are still new – and often confusing -- to many in the training profession. While 68% of organizations have adopted LMSs, only 28% have adopted LCMSs. However, mature training organizations, most of which adopted e-learning several years ago, now have a sizable challenge on their hands. What to do with the thousands of hours of content built over the years? How do we keep it current? How do we ensure accessibility from a variety of delivery approaches – from podcasts to instructor-led? How can we make reuse across different programs more efficient?

A formal content management strategy is not appropriate for all organizations. Factors such as content production volume, number of contributors, tolerance for change, potential for reuse, and sourcing strategies are only a few of the considerations.

Making training content more manageable and accessible for both formal and informal learning has the potential to deliver tremendous business value – especially with the growing number of generation Y employees. The biggest drivers for a content management strategy is leveraging content development for these new delivery options - not simply improving developer productivity.

Organizations that regularly make significant investments in electronic content would be well served by taking a fresh look at both technology and processes in order to maximize the value of content investments and meet learner expectations. Our research shows that the investments, if managed properly, can yield positive results.
