MOOC

“Massive open online course” (or MOOC) refers to a new category of vendor that provides open, no-cost (or low cost) online education and courseware. Initially, the MOOC market focused on providing academic-level courses to students around the world at little to no cost. Today, companies are building out large libraries of free or low-cost content; this market is rapidly evolving as these companies build industrial-strength learning platforms and expand their content.

The MOOC market first focused on providing academic-level courses to students around the world at little to no cost. Originally pioneered by Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and other universities, MOOCs originated in 2011 and 2012 as professors started to make their courses available online (largely video-based).

Today, this market has become legitimate and companies (venture- or university-funded) are building out large libraries of free or low-cost content. This market is rapidly evolving as companies build industrial-strength learning platforms and expand their content. The MOOC market, which originally started with higher education, is rapidly expanding into corporate and personal learning as well.
